So barks the headline of AlexRenton’s latest exercise in ecological hair-tearing. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. It’s just another overexcited sub-editor and not representative of an otherwise measured and sober article. However, the first line reads,

The worst thing that you or I can do for the planet is to have children.

And besides,

One less British child would permit some 30 women in sub-Saharan Africa to have a baby and still leave the planet a cleaner place.

Australian Senate defeats a cap and trade bill 42-30.  Ian Plimer, almost soley responsible for changing the debate from the ’science is settled’, to one of common sense – at least in Australia.    The tone deaf climate warming alarmist cheerleaders won’t likely change their tune here in Canada.

G&M Headline:  “Taliban turning to more ‘complex’ attacks“

While it is entirely possible that the Taliban are indeed conducting more ‘complex attacks’ the story leaves something to be desired.   The data points collected by Mr. Kovanen don’t tell the whole story – for nowhere does the article indicate if this increase in attacks has translated into increased effectiveness.   I note that the majority of Canadian soldiers killed in 2008 were as a result of IEDs rather than clashes or firefights - this suggests that despite the increase in so-called complex attacks, the Taliban have scored very few successes, and must resort to IEDs.   Mr. Kovanen sets the bar quite low when characterising complex attacks as those with more than one type of weapon – this is not difficult, the insurgents are typically armed with rocket propelled grenade launchers (RPG-7) and the ubiquitous AK-47 assault rifles.  What matters is whether the insurgents will be able to carry out sustained and co-ordinated attacks requiring detailed planning and command and control mechanisms – if this becomes the case, then there is cause for concern.   

Whether one agrees or not that Canada should be involved in the manner in which it is in Afghanistan, the very least the Globe could do is demand that their fact checkers do some homework rather than printing an article which the cynic in me might believe is intended to negatively affect support at home.

Does anyone even remember the serial ’scares’ which pop up from time to time – an oldy but a goody being Ehrlich’s  ‘population bomb’ which seemed to have rather fizzled than exploded.   I guess this whole AGW thingy will have them shaking their heads in about twenty years wondering how so many smart folks could have gotten it so wrong.   However never underestimate the ability for those who like to interfere in your life to find another reason…..

Don’t get me wrong – as I have said before, I do quite a bit on my own to keep the peace with this hunk of rock without anyone having to coerce me or threaten to apply carbon taxes or any of that other nonsense. 

Anyway – this should have the goracle and his ilk firing up the spin machine pretty quickly…..

Easily one of the most important stories of 2008 has been all the evidence suggesting that this may be looked back on as the year when there was a turning point in the great worldwide panic over man-made global warming. As the Czech President, Vaclav Klaus, an economist, anti-totalitarian and climate change sceptic, prepares to take up the rotating presidency of the European Union next year, climate alarmists are doing their best to traduce him.

The New York Times opened a profile of Klaus, 67, this week with a quote from a 1980s communist secret agent’s report, claiming he behaves like a “rejected genius”, and asserts there is “palpable fear” he will “embarrass” the EU.

But the real fear driving climate alarmists wild is that a more rational approach to the fundamentalist religion of global warming may be in the ascendancy – whether in the parliamentary offices of the world’s largest trading bloc or in the living rooms of Blacktown

Me, If figure my investment in Churchill waterfront property might not be paying off quite so soon.  I’m thinking a few mindless trips north of 401 to help reverse the cooling trend might be in order…..

Now that clarifies it….apparently one to many magic mushrooms amongst the caring set….

The real place where discussions of global warming belong is in the realm of belief, and particularly the motives for belief. I see three mutually compatible explanations.

The first is as a vehicle of ideological convenience. Socialism may have failed as an economic theory, but global warming alarmism, with its dire warnings about the consequences of industry and consumerism, is equally a rebuke to capitalism. Take just about any other discredited leftist nostrum of yore – population control, higher taxes, a vast new regulatory regime, global economic redistribution, an enhanced role for the United Nations – and global warming provides a justification. One wonders what the left would make of a scientific “consensus” warning that some looming environmental crisis could only be averted if every college-educated woman bore six children: Thumbs to “patriarchal” science; curtains to the species.

A second explanation is theological. Surely it is no accident that the principal catastrophe predicted by global warming alarmists is diluvian in nature. Surely it is not a coincidence that modern-day environmentalists are awfully biblical in their critique of the depredations of modern society: “And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” That’s Genesis, but it sounds like Jim Hansen.

And surely it is in keeping with this essentially religious outlook that the “solutions” chiefly offered to global warming involve radical changes to personal behavior, all of them with an ascetic, virtue-centric bent: drive less, buy less, walk lightly upon the earth and so on. A light carbon footprint has become the 21st-century equivalent of sexual abstinence.

Finally, there is a psychological explanation. Listen carefully to the global warming alarmists, and the main theme that emerges is that what the developed world needs is a large dose of penance. What’s remarkable is the extent to which penance sells among a mostly secular audience. What is there to be penitent about?

As it turns out, a lot, at least if you’re inclined to believe that our successes are undeserved and that prosperity is morally suspect. In this view, global warming is nature’s great comeuppance, affirming as nothing else our guilty conscience for our worldly success.

Upperdate:  Here’s a plan even the Lieberals can get on board with.  It has all of their favourite policy hallmarks:

• Intrusive (a government issued card that will allow you to buy your ration) with all sorts of government oversight and legions of bureaucrats to manage the policy: check;
• Open to fraud: check
• Will cost billions of tax dollars to implement (gun registry anyone?): check
• Will penalise homeowners (freeze you middle class b*stards in your mcmansions!): check
• Likely to penalise rural folks who may have to drive longer distances (probably socon anyway so f*ck them); check
• Will win votes from the enviro-weenies and 905 belt: check

an inconvenient winter

Its about damn time for some of that global warming around here.   High tomorrow of -1, with no prospect of substantially warmer weather for at least another two weeks.  End of March and I still have snow banks three feet high.  Hell, if I leave the lights on during earth hour, I might just stand a chance of moving bicycling weather a little bit closer…that can’t be bad right?
